A mother of three residing in Gaza shared the heart-wrenching moment when she discovered her residence had been obliterated by Israeli airstrikes. Alaa Radwan, along with her family, had to leave Palestine in 2024 due to frequent nearby bombings. They are currently residing in Egypt but have plans to relocate to the UK soon so that she can pursue a Master’s degree in London.
Upon receiving a photo of their demolished home from a neighbor, Alaa learned the extent of the destruction. The couple had recently paid off their home just before the tragic event on October 7. Alaa expressed how they had achieved the dream of homeownership at a young age, which is uncommon in Gaza.
Following instructions from the Israeli army to evacuate on her birthday, October 13, Alaa and her family were relocated to Deir Al-balah within the Gaza Strip. During this time, they all shared a single room, a common practice during wartime conditions.
After being displaced for a month and a half, Alaa received distressing news through a WhatsApp group that their building, including their home, had been bombed. The subsequent images of their ravaged apartment depicted a stark contrast from their once-furnished abode.
The family’s journey continued as they fled to Egypt, starting anew after losing their home, jobs, and connections in Gaza. Despite the hardships faced, Alaa remained hopeful for a better future after securing funds to move to the UK for her academic pursuits.
Reflecting on the past, Alaa acknowledged that life in Gaza would never be the same, emphasizing the loss of familiar places and the sense of community. While reminiscing about the challenges endured, she expressed gratitude for the opportunity to rebuild a life in a different environment.
