Four individuals, comprising two men and two women, have lost their lives while endeavoring to navigate the English Channel in a small vessel.
Francois-Xavier Lauch, the Pas-de-Calais regional head, revealed that the four migrants were discovered deceased while being at a considerable distance from the coastline. Following the grim incident, 42 other individuals were rescued by French authorities. Among the rescued, one person received treatment for hypothermia, and 37 were transported to a medical facility.
Mr. Lauch addressed the media, lamenting the loss of lives and indicating that the migrants were attempting to board a “taxi-boat,” commonly known as a dinghy, near Equihen-Plage.
Acknowledging the tragic event, he praised the efforts of law enforcement and firefighters for their continuous vigilance in preventing such perilous crossings.
Regarding the deceased, Mr. Lauch emphasized their advanced position in the sea and the hazardous currents that led to their tragic fate. The current estimate indicates four fatalities – two men and two women.
Additionally, one individual suffered from hypothermia, while emergency services are actively providing care for the 37 other survivors.
French authorities are closely monitoring several dinghies, including using a military helicopter for surveillance, as Mr. Lauch emphasized the accountability resting upon human smugglers.
Expressing sorrow over the tragic events, a government representative highlighted the collaborative efforts with French authorities in addressing the incident and supporting the ongoing investigation.
Charlotte Khan, from Care4Calais, voiced distress over the loss of four lives due to the hazardous border conditions and criticized governmental measures, suggesting the implementation of safe pathways for asylum seekers to reach the UK.
Imran Hussain, representing the Refugee Council, urged the government to establish secure routes for migrants seeking refuge in the UK and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased individuals.
