Claire’s Shuts Down 154 Stores in UK/Ireland

Date:

Fashion accessories retailer Claire’s has shut down its 154 stores in the UK and Ireland, resulting in approximately 1,300 job losses, according to administrators. Kroll, the administrators, confirmed that all remaining stores of the chain have ceased operations, and employees have been informed of their redundancy. However, concession outlets and European stores will continue to operate at present.

In a statement, Kroll mentioned that as of April 27th, all Claire’s standalone stores in the UK and Ireland have stopped trading, with employees being notified of their redundancy. They also indicated that discussions are ongoing with a potential interested party regarding new leases for some locations.

Last year, Modella Capital, a Mayfair finance company that acquired 156 Claire’s stores in the UK and Ireland after taking over WH Smith’s high street division, stated that while the acquisition would lead to some store closures and job cuts, it had the potential to save more than 1,000 jobs in the region.

In January of this year, Claire’s UK arm went into administration following challenging retail conditions, attributed in part to governmental policies, as reported by Modella. Concerns are now mounting for TJ Jones, previously known as the WH Smith high street business, amid rumors of an upcoming restructuring that may involve significant store closures.

The closure of the 154 stores does not impact Claire’s 356 concessions, which include locations within Asda stores and the company’s head office. Fashion expert Priya Raj highlighted that modern consumer preferences, influenced by social media, have shifted towards minimal and curated jewelry styles, moving away from Claire’s traditional colorful and novelty offerings.

Recent reports have indicated the closure of several Claire’s stores in various locations such as Cheshire Oaks, Sutton Coldfield, Stockport, Watford, and Bangor.
