Union leaders are celebrating a significant victory for employees as 9.6 million individuals will now have enhanced sick pay entitlements following an extended campaign. Today marks the implementation of new legislation wherein 1.2 million low-income workers will be entitled to statutory sick pay for the first time. Additionally, 8.4 million more workers will qualify for sick pay from the onset of their illness, with several thousand gaining new paternity leave rights.
These changes represent the initial set of adjustments stemming from the prominent Employment Rights Act. Paul Nowak, the General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), expressed, “Today signifies a pivotal moment for workers. Following persistent advocacy by unions and employees, the initial individual entitlements under the Employment Rights Act are being activated – promising transformative impacts nationwide.”
Notably, the modifications ensure that employees will now receive Statutory Sick Pay from the first day of their sickness absence rather than having to wait until the fourth day, irrespective of their income level. This adjustment is projected to result in an additional £400 million annually in sick pay for workers, fostering a scenario where individuals can recuperate without anxiety about income loss, as affirmed by the Government.
Dame Diana Johnson, the Employment Minister, emphasized, “No one should ever face the dilemma of choosing between their health and livelihood. Historically, sick workers have been confronted with the impossible choice of losing a day’s pay or rejoining work when unwell. The groundbreaking amendments introduced today will aid employees in their recovery while granting businesses the assurance that their workforce can return healthier and more productive.”
