“British Teen’s Tragic Death in Vietnam Inspires Organ Donation Legacy”

Date:

A tragic incident in northern Vietnam has claimed the life of a young British woman. Orla Wates, a 19-year-old from London, was involved in a fatal motorbike accident while exploring the Ha Giang Loop during her gap year. Despite being on the brink of starting her studies at Durham University, Orla succumbed to her injuries at Viet Duc Friendship Hospital in Hanoi on April 2.

Described as beautiful, independent, and humorous with a keen sense of wit, Orla was fondly remembered by her mother, Henrietta Wates. The grieving parents, Andrew and Henrietta, made the compassionate decision to donate Orla’s organs to aid critically ill patients at the hospital, emphasizing that it was a choice aligned with their daughter’s generous spirit.

Expressing their desire to give back to Vietnam in the wake of the tragedy, Mr. Wates, a prominent figure in the Wates building firm, acknowledged the special connection Orla had with the country. The family’s gesture of organ donation transcended borders and touched many hearts, offering hope to those in need of life-saving transplants.

Vietnam’s health minister, Dao Hong Lan, extended heartfelt condolences and appreciation to the family for their selfless act. The spirit of Orla lives on through the lives she has touched, symbolizing a continuation of her legacy through the gift of organ donation.
