Wetherspoon Reveals Dates for New Pubs

Date:

Wetherspoon has disclosed the specific launch dates for five new establishments, including one situated within a UK airport.

The upcoming pub, named Sir Frank Whittle in tribute to a British RAC officer pivotal in turbojet engine co-creation, will debut at Heathrow Terminal 2 on July 14. This marks the third Wetherspoon pub at Heathrow, with existing sites at Terminals 4 and 5.

Additionally, Wetherspoon is set to inaugurate a new venue at Birmingham University on May 26, located on Edgbaston Park Road.

Moreover, a new collaboration will see Wetherspoon operating Joe’s under a partnership structure, with the Guild of Students retaining management of the site.

In another development, a Wetherspoon establishment named The Sir Ronald Wates will open at Wates House, Surrey University in Guildford, on July 7. This pub will be owned by the university but operated as a franchise by Wetherspoon.

Furthermore, plans include the launch of two new Wetherspoon pubs at Barcelona airport. The first venue at Terminal 1 is scheduled to open by September 2026, followed by a second at Terminal 2 by January 2027.

These announcements align with Wetherspoon’s broader strategy to introduce 15 new managed pubs by the end of the ongoing financial year, as the company currently operates nearly 800 sites.

However, recent statements from Wetherspoons highlighted concerns over increased labor costs, taxes, and energy bills impacting the group’s profitability and contributing to inflation in the UK economy. Chairman Tim Martin expressed that these cost escalations may lead to profits slightly below market expectations, with the business facing significant additional expenses primarily due to national insurance and wage hikes.

Despite these challenges, Wetherspoon remains committed to minimizing price hikes while navigating the economic landscape. The company reported a notable decline in profits for the past half-year, attributed to higher wage costs, repairs, and business rates expenses.

On a positive note, revenues for the half-year rose by 5.7% to £1.09 billion compared to the previous year, with like-for-like sales up by 4.8%. Sales growth was driven by a 7% increase in bar sales, while food sales saw a 1.3% uptick, and hotel room sales dipped marginally.

Recent performance data showed a 2.6% increase in like-for-like sales over the seven weeks leading to March 15. Additionally, Wetherspoons disclosed the opening of six new venues alongside the closure or sale of six establishments in the past half-year.
