Dropping a phone during a flight is a common occurrence, whether due to shifting positions, accessing belongings, or using the restroom. However, experts warn that attempting to retrieve the phone independently could pose risks.
If a smartphone falls between seats on an aircraft, it may become lodged in the seat’s mechanical components, as highlighted by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Should the seat be reclined or adjusted with the device stuck, there is a possibility of the phone being crushed or damaged.
Apart from the inconvenience of damaged phones, there is a heightened risk associated with the lithium batteries inside. These batteries have the potential to overheat, leading to a rapid increase in temperature, release of flammable gases, and an elevated fire hazard.
In such situations, it is advised to promptly inform a cabin crew member if a phone drops between seats. Flight attendants are familiar with the aircraft’s seating layout and can safely retrieve the phone before it escalates into a safety issue.
Flight attendants receive training on the operational intricacies of each seat, enabling them to assist passengers in such scenarios. John Cox, CEO of Safety Operating Systems and a former pilot, emphasized that damaged electronics, like dropped phones, are more susceptible to thermal events.

For instance, some Taiwanese carriers no longer allow Bluetooth earbuds, including Apple AirPods, to be stowed in checked baggage.
