“Ottawa Launches Digital Transformation Canada Agency”

Date:

Ottawa is introducing a fresh federal initiative aimed at leveraging digital technologies to enhance Canadians’ access to and interaction with government services. A press release from the Prime Minister’s Office revealed the establishment of Digital Transformation Canada, which will focus on enhancing the government’s technology development, procurement, and utilization processes, among various other objectives.

The PMO also disclosed the appointment of Patrick Pichette as the new CEO of Digital Transformation Canada. Pichette, formerly the chief financial officer at Google from 2008 to 2015 and an executive at Bell Canada, McKinsey, and Spring Canada, is expected to bring extensive expertise in digital transformation, innovation, and organizational change to the role, as stated by Prime Minister Mark Carney.

The new agency, as per the PMO, will seek to implement digital solutions, including artificial intelligence, across the government to streamline operations, reduce costs, and enhance digital security and sovereignty. Carney emphasized that by modernizing public service delivery, minimizing redundancy, and supporting Canadian tech companies’ growth, the economy will be strengthened, outcomes for Canadians will improve, and Canada will be positioned as a digital leader.

The announcement highlighted that the agency will provide tools to public servants to reduce administrative burdens and enhance service delivery efficiency. Additionally, it mentioned that federal funds will be utilized to assist Canadian AI and digital firms in testing, scaling, and commercializing new technologies.

Digital Transformation Canada will be overseen by Minister of Government Transformation, Public Works, and Procurement Joël Lightbound, merging Shared Services Canada with components of the Treasury Board Secretariat, Public Services and Procurement Canada, and Employment and Social Development Canada.
