“Canada Faces 5-Degree Celsius Temperature Rise by 2100”

Date:

Canadians are facing a future where temperatures could increase by 5 degrees Celsius, as outlined in a recent report detailing the latest climate change science.

The second edition of Canada’s Changing Climate Report, which synthesizes scientific findings on the impact of global warming on Canadians, affirms that human activities, particularly the burning of fossil fuels, are driving climate change. Released by the federal government on Thursday, the report looks ahead to different scenarios based on countries’ fulfillment of climate commitments.

Nathan Gillett, a research scientist with Environment and Climate Change Canada and one of the report’s authors, emphasized the importance of current emissions levels in determining future temperature trends. The report warns that maintaining existing climate policies will lead to significant warming in Canada, with projections indicating a 5-degree increase by the end of the century and even greater warming in specific regions like Nunavut.

The report predicts dire consequences for Canada if global emissions remain unchecked, including the potential loss of over 75% of glaciers in western Canada and a high likelihood of ice-free conditions in the central Arctic Ocean during most Septembers. The disappearance of iconic landscapes due to diminishing snow and ice cover is a concerning trend highlighted in the report.

Southern Canada is also expected to experience challenges, with longer, more intense summer droughts and increased risks of flash flooding and atmospheric rivers. The report underscores the need for proactive measures to mitigate these impacts and stresses the importance of global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

While the report paints a stark picture of a warming world, the Canadian Climate Institute emphasizes that the projected 5-degree warming is not inevitable. By taking decisive action to cut emissions, both in Canada and globally, the institute believes it is possible to limit future warming to 3.5 degrees Celsius. Every degree of avoided warming can save lives, protect communities and livelihoods, and yield significant economic benefits.

In response to the report, a climate advocacy group has called for accelerated emission reduction efforts, citing recent severe storms and flooding in Toronto as evidence of the urgent need for climate action. Canada’s environment minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to reducing emissions and achieving net-zero status by 2050, emphasizing the dual goals of combatting climate change and ensuring national energy security and industrial resilience.
