Police are looking into a suspected case of arson at the residence of a Scarborough MP following the destruction of multiple vehicles early Thursday, as confirmed by her office. Scarborough Centre-Don Valley East MP Salma Zahid released a statement on Thursday indicating that an “individual” set fire to her car and another vehicle parked outside her home overnight. Both vehicles were completely destroyed, but fortunately, the home itself was unharmed, and Zahid ensured the safety of her family. She refrained from speculating on the motive, awaiting the results of the investigation.
Speaking to the media outside her residence later in the day, Zahid described the incident as highly traumatic for her family. Expressing concerns for their safety, she mentioned the closure of her constituency office for the day. The Toronto Police reported that three cars were damaged due to a fire in the vicinity of Bellamy Road N. and Lawrence Avenue E. around 1:20 a.m., yet no direct link to Zahid was confirmed.
Neighbor Victoria Konstantellos recalled the moment she heard what seemed like a muted explosion while half-asleep. Rushing outside, she saw flames on Zahid’s front lawn and took immediate action to ensure the safety of neighbors. Nandkumar Chava, a tenant living adjacent to Zahid’s residence, shared security camera footage showing an individual approaching the vehicles with a jerry can, pouring a liquid assumed to be gasoline, and setting the cars on fire before fleeing.
Describing the suspect as having a slim build, Toronto police provided details of his attire during the incident. Zahid, a member of the Liberal Party and MP for Scarborough Centre, announced plans to discuss security measures with the House of Commons’ sergeant-at-arms. Prime Minister Mark Carney condemned the act as “unacceptable,” expressing relief that Zahid and her family were unharmed. Various political figures and organizations have also voiced support and condemnation for the incident, emphasizing the importance of finding and holding the perpetrator accountable.
