Prime Minister Mark Carney has rebuked derogatory comments made by U.S. cabinet members towards Canada and its military, deeming the remarks as unbecoming of their positions. Carney urged the U.S. officials to refrain from hostile rhetoric and approach trade negotiations with seriousness.
Carney’s response came after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent likened Canada’s navy to a defunct attraction at the West Edmonton Mall, and U.S. Transport Secretary Sean Duffy claimed that Canada lacks a military. Carney expressed his disappointment, stating that such behavior is not conducive to productive discussions but acknowledged it as part of the American democratic process.
Tensions escalated following the breakdown of trade talks between the two countries on August 21. President Donald Trump and his cabinet members resorted to social media attacks, including mocking Canada by renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America.” The insults extended to online taunts and disparaging comments about Canadian military cadets and a video featuring Canada geese with Trump-like hair.
In response to the disparagement, Canadian officials, including Defence Minister David McGuinty and Ontario Premier Doug Ford, condemned the disrespectful behavior. Carney emphasized that Canada withdrew from negotiations due to unreasonable demands from the U.S., which threatened Canadian sovereignty and key industries.
Despite the fallout, Carney remains hopeful for a mutually beneficial trade agreement that respects Canadian interests and culture. In retaliation to U.S. tariffs on Canadian exports, Canada announced reciprocal tariffs. Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne emphasized the need for a constructive dialogue to protect Canada’s vital sectors.
At a meeting with U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent, Champagne reiterated Canada’s firm stance on safeguarding key industries. The discussions focused on artificial intelligence, global trade imbalances, and the importance of resolving trade tensions at the leadership level. Additionally, Champagne promoted Canada as a reliable source of food, energy, and critical minerals globally.
A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll revealed that a majority of Americans oppose Trump’s tariffs on Canadian goods and the renaming of Lake Ontario as “Lake America.” The survey highlighted public sentiment against these measures, indicating a significant disapproval rate among American respondents.
