Kevin Pietersen has sparked a renewed dispute with former teammate Alastair Cook over Cook’s criticism of England’s Jacob Bethell choosing to stay in the Indian Premier League. Despite Bethell’s standout performance in England’s defeat to Australia in the Ashes, he has not seen much game time with Royal Challengers Bengaluru after six matches.
Cook advised the 22-year-old to return to play for Warwickshire in the County Championship instead of remaining inactive in the IPL. England is set to kick off a three-match series against New Zealand shortly after the IPL final, where RCB has a strong chance of advancing.
In contrast, Pietersen, who was ostracized from the England team during Cook’s captaincy, defended Bethell’s decision. Pietersen emphasized that Cook lacks an understanding of the IPL environment and the benefits of being surrounded by top-tier players. He encouraged Bethell to stay in India, highlighting the learning opportunities despite not being on the field.
Expressing his opinion further, Pietersen remarked that if county cricket were as competitive as it was in the past, he too would advocate for Bethell’s return. However, Pietersen believes Bethell’s development in India will ultimately benefit English cricket.
The rift between Pietersen and Cook dates back to Pietersen’s exclusion from the Test squad, following an incident where he criticized then-England captain Andrew Strauss. Cook later expressed regrets over the situation, acknowledging the challenges he faced during that period.
Bethell, who had limited game time last season, acknowledged feeling underprepared upon his return to England but remains steadfast in his belief that staying in India is crucial for his development.
