The extensive destruction caused by the disaster on August 26 is impeding rescue operations in both countries due to landslides, road demolitions, and extensive infrastructure damage isolating remote regions. Rescuers are encountering formidable challenges navigating unstable landscapes and debris piles, heightening concerns of a potential increase in the death toll as they reach isolated communities.
Efforts are underway to reach potentially trapped workers, estimated to be around 900, at 12 hydroelectric projects in Nepal that suffered damage from the floods. Nepal’s army spokesperson, Brig. In Kathmandu, amidst heavy rainfall, authorities are conducting burials for multiple victims in marked graves, utilizing DNA samples and detailed documentation to facilitate future identification by families. Relief operations have been expanded to reach stranded communities, with over 11,800 individuals rescued thus far. The federal government is dispatching $5 million in emergency aid to Nepal, with additional assistance earmarked for reconstruction efforts.
