Mount Robson’s Berg Glacier in British Columbia is undergoing significant changes, with researchers noting that the glacier has retreated to the point where it no longer reaches Berg Lake. Joseph Shea, a geography associate professor at the University of Northern British Columbia, observed this change during a recent field project on the mountain and captured a photo highlighting the glacier’s separation from the lake.
The Berg Glacier, situated on the north face of Mount Robson, the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies near the Alberta border, historically extended to Berg Lake, shedding ice chunks into the turquoise waters. The resulting icebergs in Berg Lake were a popular sight for visitors exploring the area, including the renowned 23-kilometre Berg Lake Trail.
Recent observations have shown that the glacier’s retreat has created a physical gap between the glacier and the lake. While this change may not directly impact the water levels of Berg Lake, it signifies a significant transformation in the glacial landscape due to climate change.
Research conducted by Brian Menounos, a UNBC researcher, indicates that glaciers in Western Canada and Switzerland have lost approximately 22% of their surface area between 1985 and 2021. Additionally, the Berg Lake Trail has faced challenges from climate change-induced flooding, such as the severe damage caused during a record-breaking heatwave in 2021.
Efforts to address these environmental changes include setting up real-time weather stations to monitor snowpack, temperature, humidity, and other factors crucial for park management and visitor safety. B.C. Parks aims to use the data collected to make informed decisions on park operations and prepare for potential risks in Mount Robson Provincial Park.
Despite these alterations to the glacial landscape, Mount Robson remains a breathtaking destination for outdoor enthusiasts, offering awe-inspiring scenery and recreational opportunities. The evolving conditions serve as a poignant reminder of the ongoing impacts of climate change on these natural wonders.
