“Kroenke Sports & Entertainment Acquires Majority Stake in Los Angeles Angels”

Date:

Kroenke Sports and Entertainment has agreed to acquire a majority stake in the Los Angeles Angels from Arte Moreno, further expanding its portfolio of sports teams in the United States. The deal, announced by Stan Kroenke’s company, is expected to be finalized in early 2027 pending approval from Major League Baseball.

The acquisition adds the Angels to Kroenke’s impressive roster of sports franchises, which includes the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams, Premier League’s Arsenal, NBA’s Denver Nuggets, NHL’s Colorado Avalanche, and Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids. This move marks the conglomerate’s entry into the realm of baseball, as the Angels bid farewell to Moreno after a tumultuous 23-year reign under his ownership.

Expressing optimism about the future, Kroenke stated, “The Angels have a rich history in a vibrant market, and we are excited about the prospects ahead with the organization.” Moreno, who purchased the team from Walt Disney Company in 2003, oversaw initial success with the Angels winning multiple AL West titles. However, the team has struggled in recent years, currently heading towards their 11th consecutive losing season.

In contrast, Kroenke’s teams have enjoyed success in various sports, with championships in recent years and strong competitiveness across the board. The Angels’ challenges in the past two decades have been linked to Moreno’s hands-on approach to decision-making and lack of investment in infrastructure and support staff compared to other MLB teams.

Despite fan discontent and dwindling success, Moreno’s family decided to sell the team, leading to the appointment of John Mozeliak to revamp the team’s operations. The move signifies a new chapter for the Angels under Kroenke Sports and Entertainment, becoming only the fourth permanent owner of the franchise since its inception in 1961 by Gene Autry.

Moving forward, the Angels organization aims to uphold its commitment to fans, employees, players, and business partners, as it transitions to a new era under Kroenke’s ownership.
