Germany Takes Strong Action Against Russia After Drone Attack at Airport

Date:

The German government accused Russia of a recent attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport, resulting in the decision to close a Russian consulate and take other actions against Moscow. The drone, discovered near a Ukrainian aircraft on August 4, was dismantled, with German officials noting the heightened danger posed by the incident.

Officials from Western countries have frequently accused Moscow of orchestrating disruptive activities across Europe to weaken support for Ukraine and destabilize European states. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt highlighted the similarities between the drone used in the Leipzig incident and those employed in Russian operations in Ukraine, indicating a level of technical sophistication and detailed planning, although the actual execution may have involved lower-level operatives.

Authorities believe that individuals linked to Russian state entities were behind the attempted attack at Leipzig Airport. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul emphasized the deliberate nature of the attack and announced the closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn and the Russian House cultural center in Berlin.

Germany is planning to propose additional Russian individuals for EU sanctions related to hybrid attacks, intensify entry controls for Russians, and increase scrutiny on tankers suspected of transporting Russian oil in violation of sanctions. The Russian ambassador was summoned to the Foreign Ministry in Berlin to address the situation.

Russian officials have denied involvement in the drone attack, with President Vladimir Putin dismissing the allegations as an attempt to deflect internal issues and discredit Russia. Despite tensions, European allies have expressed support for Germany, with NATO and Canada standing in solidarity against Russian aggression.
