University of Waterloo doctoral student Kaveeshan Thurairajah, while not a Nobel Prize winner, did receive an Ig Nobel Prize. The Ig Nobels, a light-hearted imitation of the Nobel Prizes, honor the most unconventional and creative research in academia. Thurairajah and his team were awarded this year’s Ig Nobel Prize in Physics for their work on developing a urinal that prevents splashing.
Thurairajah recalled the moment his mentor, fluid physicist Zhao Pan, shared the good news with him. Celebrating with a bottle of wine from Pan’s office cupboard, they toasted their success in espresso cups. The team experimented with various urinal designs, such as the Nautilus and Cornucopia, to create a splash-free and easy-to-clean model.
Attending the awards ceremony in Zurich, Thurairajah and his colleagues sported bright yellow raincoats, prepared for recognition from their fellow quirky scientists. Despite the humorous nature of their research, Thurairajah emphasized the practical value it holds for enhancing public restroom experiences.
In addition to Thurairajah’s team, Canadian researchers from the University of Toronto and McGill University were also honored at the ceremony. The event, organized by the Annals of Improbable Research, moved to Europe after 35 years in the U.S. due to visa concerns. Thurairajah commended the decision, highlighting the international collaboration and camaraderie within the scientific community.
The study on urinal design and its findings were detailed in the journal PNAS Nexus. Other notable Ig Nobel Prize recipients explored topics like the behavior of upper-class individuals stealing candy from children, using mosquito proboscises in 3D printing, and investigating various quirky scientific phenomena.
