The family of a British teenager is facing a second heartbreaking loss during her gap year in Vietnam. Orla Wates, 19, tragically passed away after a motorbike crash on the Ha Giang Loop mountain road. This incident echoes the death of her cousin, William Wates, who also died at 19 while traveling in Honduras just before starting university.
Orla’s liver, kidneys, and corneas were donated following her death. Described as beautiful, independent, and witty, she was the daughter of Andy and Henrietta Wates. Andy, a director of the Wates construction company, had previously lost his nephew, William, in a tragic incident in Honduras in 1996, where he was robbed and fatally shot.
William, known for his volunteer work in South and Central America, was the youngest of five brothers and was on a gap year before pursuing Ancient History studies at Nottingham University. His father, Andrew Wates, a prominent figure in horse racing, continued with planned events after William’s death, eventually establishing the William Wates Memorial Trust to support disadvantaged children in his son’s memory.
