Barclays to Close Barclaycard Website, Shift to App

Date:

Barclays has revealed the closure of its Barclaycard website, advising customers to transition to using the app instead. The shutdown of the website is scheduled for June 10, as Barclays notes a growing trend of customers opting for the app for their daily banking needs. The bank assures that in due course, customers will have access to online Barclaycard services through the Barclays website. With over five million customer accounts in the UK, Barclaycard plays a significant role in the financial landscape.

Customers were notified via email about the forthcoming closure, emphasizing that the change will not impact their accounts or card usage. The shift towards app-based banking is attributed to the increasing preference of customers for mobile banking solutions, as stated in the communication to customers.

The decision has sparked mixed reactions on social media, with some expressing frustration over the move. However, a spokesperson clarified that the move aims to simplify processes for customers by integrating Barclaycard services into Barclays online banking gradually. The transition will not disrupt regular online banking activities and will offer various channels for account management, including the app, telephone banking, and in-branch services.

In a separate development, Barclays plans to re-establish a physical presence by opening new branches and reintroducing traditional “bank managers.” Vim Maru, Barclays UK’s chief executive officer, highlighted the importance of personalized customer service and accessibility, emphasizing the balance between digital innovation and human interaction. The move comes as Barclays continues to adapt its branch network, with a strategic focus on enhancing customer experience and service quality.
