“M1 Motorway Chaos: Delays After Serious Collision”

Date:

Motorists on the motorway are facing significant delays this morning due to a closure of all four lanes on a section of the road, disrupting bank holiday traffic. The M1 has experienced major disturbances between junctions J11 and J10 on Friday morning, April 3, following a traffic collision, according to Traffic England.

Emergency services have reacted to the incident, labeling it as a “serious collision.” While all lanes for the M1 south between J11 and J10 at Luton have been reopened after an earlier collision, delays of 10 minutes are currently being reported against expected traffic.

The National Highways traffic alerts system has indicated delays of 50 minutes compared to expected traffic. The situation is expected to normalize between 10:15 am and 10:30 am, with two out of four lanes now accessible.

A two-way crash involving a car and a motorbike on M1 Southbound after J11 A505 has been reported by traffic information provider Inrix. Three lanes are now closed, with only one lane open as police and ambulance services are on-site.

National Highways mentioned that traffic is flowing through one lane (of four) for the M1 south between J11 and J10 at Luton following an earlier collision, causing 45-minute delays from J11a. The road closure was reported between junctions 10 and 11 around 07:45 am.

Drivers have been cautioned about 30-minute delays, and diversions are in operation, with motorists being redirected off the M1 onto the A505 and then the A5 through Dunstable. The East England Ambulance Service is currently present at the scene.

National Highways has classified the incident as a “serious collision,” with significant delays anticipated from J11a. The closure of all four lanes on the M1 between junctions J11 and J10 is due to a road traffic collision, as stated by Traffic England.

The disruption is particularly affecting drivers heading to Luton Airport due to the proximity of the incident. Predictions had already indicated challenging road conditions for today, with millions of motorists expected to be on the move for the busiest Easter getaway since 2022, potentially encountering long queues and fuel-related concerns.

The RAC, a motoring services company, foresees this Bank Holiday Easter weekend as one of the busiest in years, with an estimated 20.3 million vehicles projected to be on the roads on Easter Saturday.
