“Manitoba Joins Western Canada in Ditching Time Changes”

Date:

Western Canada continues to resist changing times as Manitoba becomes the latest province to join British Columbia, Alberta, and the Northwest Territories in ending the practice of switching between daylight and standard time. The decision by Manitoba to stick to daylight time simplifies life for residents but creates a unique situation for a small part of Ontario. Northwestern Ontario, including Kenora, will now share a time zone with Manitoba, making it one hour behind Thunder Bay to the east and Winnipeg to the west during the winter months.

This move by Manitoba highlights the varying time zones within Canada. For instance, the East Kootenay region in British Columbia aligns its time with Alberta, Newfoundland and Labrador observe Atlantic time, and Nunavut spans three time zones. In 2020, Ontario passed a law to end the time change practice, contingent on similar actions by Quebec and New York. While Quebec remains unchanged, the northern region of Nunavik has transitioned to permanent daylight time.

In the United States, the House of Representatives approved a bill to make daylight saving time permanent nationwide, with the legislation now moving to the Senate for consideration. Similarly, the New York state Senate is currently deliberating a similar change. These developments reflect a trend towards consistency in timekeeping practices across North America.
