Drummers are often overlooked, hidden behind their kits, maintaining a sense of mystery and anonymity. However, Neil Peart, renowned for his role in the Canadian rock band Rush, stands out as one of the greatest drummers in music history.

In the documentary “Neil Peart: No One’s Disciple,” directors Scot McFadyen and Sam Dunn pay tribute to Peart’s life, exceptional musical talent, and enduring impact through interviews and live performances. The film features insights from bandmates Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson, as well as other drumming legends like Stewart Copeland and Chad Smith, who honor Peart’s legacy by performing Rush songs together. The documentary premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 16, unveiling 11 enlightening facts about Neil Peart:

1. Peart’s name is pronounced as ‘Peert,’ not ‘Pert’ like the shampoo, as commonly mispronounced.
2. At 18, Peart moved to London to pursue a music career, facing challenges that shaped his determination and resilience.
3. He had a strong passion for reading, devouring multiple books daily, which eventually led to his role as a lyricist.
4. Peart was an avid fan of “The Lord of the Rings,” drawing inspiration from fantasy, mythology, and classical music for Rush’s songs.
5. Known for his dedication, Peart rehearsed rigorously before band rehearsals, always striving to improve.
6. Peart played a pivotal role in creating Rush’s elaborate sound, particularly showcased in the iconic “2112” suite.
7. During studio sessions, Peart enjoyed a glass of Macallan whisky, with Lee joking about his increasing pour size over the years.
8. His drum solos were so intricate and captivating that fans often found themselves air drumming along during performances.
9. Despite his musical fame, Peart remained intensely private and focused on his craft.
10. Peart was passionate about cycling and later became an avid motorcyclist, documenting his journeys in his memoir.
11. After personal tragedies, Peart briefly retired but returned for one final tour, leaving a lasting mark on the music world.

The film captures the essence of Neil Peart’s genius and serves as a heartfelt tribute to his remarkable career. It celebrates his musical legacy and the profound impact he had on the drumming community. “Neil Peart: No One’s Disciple” will be broadcast on CBC’s “The Passionate Eye” on September 23 at 8 p.m. (8:30 NT).
