“Hamilton NHL Prospect Critical After Training Incident”

Date:

Hamilton-native NHL prospect Matthew Mayich is in critical condition after a training incident at Arizona State University last month, according to his family’s attorney. Rob Carey, speaking on behalf of Mayich’s family, mentioned that the 21-year-old’s parents from Hamilton’s Stoney Creek area are by his side in the hospital and are grateful for the outpouring of support from their Canadian community.

Mayich, a draft pick for the St. Louis Blues, collapsed during a workout session at Arizona State University due to exertional heatstroke, which led to a lack of oxygen to his brain. This incident has sparked discussions on the dangers of exertional heatstroke in athletes, as highlighted in a report in the BMJ Medicine journal.

Arizona State University has acknowledged the incident and is conducting a thorough review led by senior vice-president James Rund to assess the circumstances surrounding the workout and ensure adherence to safety protocols. The university has refrained from releasing specific details to protect the privacy of the student-athlete and their family.

Carey expressed concerns about the intensity of the workout Mayich underwent, describing it as overly strenuous and lacking breaks or adequate hydration. He emphasized the importance of proper procedures, such as immediate cooling measures, in cases of heatstroke.

The family is seeking answers and a comprehensive investigation into the incident, including interviews with witnesses and scrutiny of relevant evidence. ASU Police Department is currently investigating the matter to ascertain the facts, with no implications of criminal behavior at this stage.

Mayich, known for his hockey prowess and mentorship of young players in Hamilton, has left a positive impact on the local hockey community. The Hamilton Steel Hockey Club commended Mayich’s character both on and off the ice, expressing their unwavering support for him and his family during this challenging time.
