In a recent development, the Federal Court has mandated the disclosure of previously undisclosed sections of a significant study from September 1986 commissioned for a federal inquiry on war crimes. Federal Court Justice Simon Fothergill’s ruling, revealed today, compels the government to unveil redacted segments of the report concerning the post-World War II resettlement of suspected Nazi war criminals in Canada.
B’nai Brith Canada has persistently advocated for the release of more information contained in the report authored by researcher Alti Rodal. Earlier this year, Library and Archives Canada unveiled some additional sections of the report following an information request from B’nai Brith.
Despite this, certain parts of the report, including discussions on the involvement of American intelligence agencies in aiding the settlement of Nazi collaborators in Canada, have still been withheld by Library and Archives Canada. Justice Fothergill dismissed the government’s argument that the disclosure of specific details could adversely affect Canada’s international relations.
